Zero Tolerance of Sexual Misconduct

Vancouver, BC, March 29, 2021 – Recently, allegations of sexual assaults by real estate professionals in Victoria, BC have appeared on social media and have been reported in the news media. As the regulator of licensed real estate professionals, the Real Estate Council of BC (RECBC) is deeply concerned by the allegations. We commend the courage of the individuals who came forward to tell their stories.

RECBC’s position is clear: any act of sexual abuse, misconduct or violence by a real estate professional towards a member of the public, a client, or a colleague is unacceptable.

RECBC will cooperate with law enforcement in any criminal investigations and is separately empowered to investigate and discipline real estate professionals through its regulatory powers for conduct that undermines public confidence in the real estate industry or that brings the real estate industry into disrepute. All real estate professionals are expected to act with integrity, honesty, and professionalism.

An investigation of sexual misconduct by a real estate professional that results in discipline may include penalties up to and including licence cancellation.

We encourage industry members and the general public to contact law enforcement about any incidents of sexual assault or violence.

You can file a complaint with RECBC or use our Anonymous Tipline if you are aware of sexual or any other serious misconduct by a real estate professional. RECBC thoroughly reviews all complaints and acts in a timely and sensitive manner on any information involving allegations of sexual misconduct and other forms of abuse.
