Updates to the Ethics Course
BCFSA is pleased to introduce the latest ethics course, Ethics – Professionalism and Principles in Practice.
The updated ethics course focuses on how real estate licensees apply ethical judgment in real-world conditions to protect the public and deliver consistent, client-focused service.
This course reinforces that professionalism extends beyond knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements. It emphasizes ethical conduct not only as a regulatory requirement, but as a practical foundation for consumer protection, long‑term trust, and sustainable professional success.
The course is built on the understanding that ethical and professional behaviour is best supported through a structured, principle-based approach. Central to this approach are three pillars of ethical development:
- Compliance – understanding and applying legislative and regulatory requirements, supported by sound documentation and risk aware systems
- Client focus and value – delivering clear, fair, and transparent service through expectation setting, ethical client relationships, and value‑driven decision‑making
- Professional courtesy and accountability – fostering respectful communication, constructive conflict resolution, and accountability that protects consumers and strengthens trust in the profession
Throughout the course, learners are guided through a practical ethical decision-making framework and invited to consider how culture, systems, workload, and communication pressures influence judgment in real‑world situations. Scenarios, case law, and applied tools help translate principles into consistent professional habits that reduce risk and support defensible decision‑making.
Like all BCFSA continuing education courses, Ethics – Professionalism and Principles in Practice combines online learning with an interactive classroom component. The online materials provide a shared foundation of knowledge and introduce key concepts, frameworks, and tools. These ideas are then explored more deeply in the classroom through discussion, practical examples, and scenario‑based activities that encourage reflection and application across practice areas.
Together, these components reinforce that ethical practice is not a single choice, but a repeatable process supported by clear systems, thoughtful judgment, and a commitment to professionalism in every interaction.
