Update on Safe Real Estate Services During COVID-19

November 23, 2020 — B.C.’s Public Health Officer announced new measures on Thursday, November 19, 2020, in response to the second surge of COVID-19 in the province. These include province-wide restrictions on non-essential travel within BC and a requirement for the wearing of masks in public indoor settings and workplaces. The measures are in effect until December 7, 2020.

To protect the health and safety of the public and real estate professionals, RECBC continues to urge that no open houses should be held at the current time. Real estate professionals who are conducting showings or viewing properties either for sale or rent should continue to use virtual tools whenever possible and to limit in-person interactions with clients and consumers. In-person showings must follow the Public Health Office guidelines regarding physical distancing and use of protective equipment, including masks.

Masks are now required in all indoor public settings, including common areas in apartment buildings and condos. Strata managers should discuss with their clients safe approaches to holding any scheduled general or council meetings, which could include rescheduling or conducting electronically as permitted by the emergency provincial orders.

RECBC is working with the Office of the Superintendent of Real Estate, the BC Real Estate Association and other stakeholders to review the orders from the Public Health Office and to update our guidance as necessary for real estate professionals and our information resources for consumers.
